EM Team win inaugural World Sepsis Day SIM event at Sligo University Hospital

In order to mark World Sepsis Day on September 13th, 4 teams of hospital clinicians battled it out on a Simulated Sepsis scenario.

The represented teams were:

  • Obstetrics & Gynaecologyobsgyn-team
  • Internal Medicinemedical-team
  • General Surgerysurgical-team
  • Emergency Medicineem-team-in-action

There was a panel of esteemed clinicians from other specialties to judge the event.judges judges-confer

Training in Bedside Cardiac Echo in the Critically Ill @ SUH

Apical4ChamberCROPThe Cardiac Investigations Department will run training sessions over the next six weeks aimed at ICU, EM, and Acute Medicine Consultants and Trainees

The six weeks of echo practical sessions will consist of:

5/9/2016: Week 1.” Knobology”, enter patient details, saving images etc. (On different echo machines, including portable vivid machines).
12/9/2016: Week 2. Apical Views, Ap4ch, AP2ch, Ap Long Axis, Ap5Ch – LV function.
19/9/2016: Week 3. Parasternal long axis, RV inflow, RV outflow – LV function.
26/9/2016: Week 4. Parasternal short axis images, apical, pap and AV level – LV function.
3/10/2016: Week 5. Suprasternal and Subcostal imaging, IVC, effusion assessment, aortic arch.

10/10/2016: Week 6. Basic valve assessment.
17/10/2016: Week 7. Assessment day

Location of echo practical sessions for weeks above: Cardiac Investigations Department, level 4, SUH.

Time: 1-1.30pm sharp.

Simulation training continues in the ED

This week we ran an unannounced simulated paediatric trauma case, with the Hospital Resuscitation Officer, the National Ambulance Service, the Emergency Department, the Nursing Office, Intensive Care Unit, and the Paediatric Department.

It was a great opportunity to run through

  • Paramedic to ED Handover, handover from NAS
  • Paediatric Resuscitation,
  • Trauma Management,
  • Head Injury Management,
  • Difficult Airway Management, prep for intubation
  • Pneumothorax management,
  • ED to ICU handover
  • Debriefing

Lots of lessons learned. Well done to all!

ED and ICU staff in training day with Rescue 118

Staff from ED and ICU were invited for an orientation and training day with the Irish Coastguard crew of Rescue 118 in Strandhill.rescue118The Irish Coastguard provides a fantastic service to the ED in Sligo. It has helped save dozens of lives over the past few years, not only in rescuing people in difficulty, but also in helping us transport very ill patients to specialist units in other hospitals. In particular, it has become an essential component of the STEMI protocol for our region.

The ED at Sligo University Hospital has a long history of employing motivated, hard-working doctors who are keen to experience work in a vibrant, challenging, and rapidly-evolving specialty.

The feedback from our former staff has been very positive. Our doctors enjoy the interesting case-mix of adult and paediatric cases, combined with close consultant supervision and support, and an excellent teaching program.

Many of our trainees have progressed to get places on the Higher Specialist Training programs in Emergency Medicine in Ireland, UK, Australia and New Zealand. We have a 100% record in our trainees passing the FCEM.

Our department is recognized for Advanced Specialist Training in Emergency Medicine, and Core Specialist Training in Emergency Medicine, Medicine, and General Practice.

The Sligo University Hospital EM / Orthopaedics Rotation July 2016

The successful candidate will spend 3 months as an SHO in Emergency Medicine and 3 months as an SHO in Trauma/ Orthopaedics.

If in the initial 6 months the performance is satisfactory, there may be opportunities for the candidate to complete a further 3 months in EM, and 3 months Acute Medicine.

This six/ twelve month rotation will offer the candidate a good introduction to Emergency Medicine in Ireland, and should put him/her in good position to apply for a formalized training program.

Candidates must be eligible for registration with the Medical Council of Ireland (http://www.medicalcouncil.ie/)

Our trainees have a good past record of getting places on the National Advanced Specialist Training Scheme in Emergency Medicine. The rota is European Working Time compliant with very few night shifts, and one-in-four weekends.

The contracts available are for 6 or 12 months. The Medical Manpower Office can assist with seeking accommodation, schools, childcare etc.

Candidates are expected to have a keen interest in gaining experience in Emergency Medicine at a Middle Grade level, with previous EM experience essential.

Unfortunately, Dr Mick Killeen is returning to New Zealand after a year at the ED in Sligo.

We had a great year with him on our team, and he’ll be sorely missed

On the lakeBy the lakeIn order to bid him farewell , the ED crew (that weren’t on duty) spent the afternoon on Lough Gill learning to Stand Up Paddle (SUP) with SUPForAll. In treacherous conditions, the ED staff braved the elements. SUP Crew
